Ocean Engineering covers a wide range. The most common fields of Ocean Engineering (and cases of using large-diameter plastic pipes) are:

 

1. Energy: Thermal power stations and nuclear power stations need a lot of water for heat exchange. It is economical and safe to build on the beach. After learning the lessons of the Japanese accident, China's new nuclear power plants will be built along the coast. Coastal and offshore areas are also often conducive to tidal, wind and solar power generation.


 

Case: Fujian new choice pipe is manufacturing PE100 RC structural wall pipe for marine engineering for kauswagan power station in Medan, northern Philippines: water intake pipe 2 x825m DN 2600; drainage pipe 2x800m DM 2800. This is the largest diameter plastic pipe produced in China.

 

Case: The spiral wound plastic pipe with the largest diameter so far was completed in Argentina in 2018. The material PE100 has an inner diameter of 3600mm, a wall thickness of 220mm and a pressure grade of 10bar.


 

2. Seawater desalination: With the breakthrough of water treatment technology, the construction of seawater desalination and supporting pipe network has become a hot topic in the global transformation of the environment (using modern technology to convert seawater and purify sewage is often more economical and environmentally friendly than long-distance water transfer projects).

 

Case: In recent years, the UAE has built a seawater desalination plant and a 400 km large-diameter plastic pipe network across the UAE.

 

3. Petrochemical industry: large petrochemical enterprises need a large amount of access and transportation, as well as a large amount of water intake and drainage. It is the most economical and convenient to build in coastal areas or islands.

 

Case: In the large-scale construction of petrochemical projects in the Middle East, Bolu company learned the lessons of heavy losses caused by pipeline corrosion in the past and widely used plastic pipes, such as the first large-diameter welded PP seawater inlet and outlet pipeline for oil refining in the Middle East. 4. Sea discharge project: it is an internationally recognized environmental protection measure to discharge the treated domestic wastewater and production wastewater to the deep-water area of the ocean for consumption, which is usually called "sea discharge project". Every year, there are many reports on the sea drainage project of plastic pipes.

 

Case: In 2002, Montpellier's sea discharge project in France was the largest ocean project in the world at that time, creating the initiative of floating and transporting hundreds of meters of long diameter plastic pipes at sea

 

Case: In 2017, 880m DN 3000mm hollow wall pipe was used in the sea discharge project in London, UK.

5. Island Construction: many prosperous cities in the world are built on islands, and many important industrial bases and military bases are also built on islands. China has more than 7600 large and small islands, and many inhabited islands lack fresh water supply. Therefore, China started earlier and made many achievements in using plastic pipes to transport fresh water across the sea and islands.

 

However, there is still a big gap compared with the international advanced level. There is no cross sea water transmission project using large-diameter plastic pipe in China, and there is no cross sea pipeline that floats the water transmission pipe in deep water but does not sink to the bottom.


Case: Turkey invested nearly US $600 million to build a trans Mediterranean water pipeline project from Turkey to Cyprus. Among them, an 80km PE100 pipe with a diameter of 1600mm across the sea is suspended 250m below the water surface (the deepest seabed is 1430m), which can transport 75 million cubic meters of water every year.

 

6. Marine biological breeding: the breeding of marine organisms can build facilities on the sea or fishing grounds on the sea and land, all of which make extensive use of plastic pipes.

 

Case: The world's largest land-based fishing ground is in Spain. It uses 5308m 2000mm PE pipe to transport seawater, with an annual output of 7000 tons of Turbo fish.
