Taking the pipe extrusion head as an example, the head is mainly composed of the following parts.
(1) Head body. It is used to assemble all parts of the head and to connect with the extruder.
(2) Breaker plate. The breaker plate is located between the extruder and the head. Its function is to convert the melt flow from spiral motion to linear motion, while also preventing the few unplasticized plastic particles and mechanical impurities from entering the head. To further enhance its filtering effect, a finer-mesh screen can be placed on the breaker plate, which increases extrusion resistance and results in a more compact profile.
(3) Spider (or diverter support). Its main functions are to support the diverter and the mandrel, and to split the melt into multiple streams for better homogenization. For small-sized heads, the spider and the diverter can be designed as an integral part.
(4) Diverter (also known as torpedo). The molten plastic is divided into a tubular parison by the diverter, and is further heated and plasticized under shear action. In large heads, a heating device is also installed inside the diverter to ensure uniform plasticization of the melt.
(5) Adjusting screw(s). It is used to adjust the gap between the die and the mandrel, ensuring uniform wall thickness of the profile.
(6) Mandrel. The mandrel is the part that forms the inner surface of the profile. The inner wall quality, surface roughness, shape, and dimensions of the profile depend on the mandrel.
(7) Die. The die is the part that forms the outer surface of the profile. After passing through the die, the plastic acquires the desired shape and dimensions.
(8) Calibrating sleeve (or sizing sleeve). The calibrating sleeve imparts good surface roughness, proper dimensional accuracy, and the required geometric shape to the profile.
(9) Plug (or sealing plug). It prevents compressed air from leaking and maintains a certain internal pressure within the profile.
