Impact of Torque Class on Production:
1. Throughput & Shear Control:
- Higher torque classes allow screw speeds to increase to 600–1000 rpm, increasing throughput by 30%–50% at comparable energy consumption. For example, a 65 mm high-torque model can achieve a throughput of 600–1000 kg/h, significantly higher than standard models.
- Generally, for each 1 Nm/cm³ increase in torque class, the shear rate decreases by 15%–20% at the same throughput, reducing molecular chain degradation of the material. For instance, during nylon toughening, the notched impact strength can increase by approximately 8%.
2. Material Suitability:
- Materials requiring high shear (e.g., for additive/filler dispersion) need a torque class ≥ 11 to ensure uniform dispersion of additives and fillers.
- Heat-sensitive materials benefit from a torque class ≥ 13, which shortens melt residence time and prevents thermal decomposition.
