In-Depth Analysis of Twin-Screw Extruders

Ningbo Fangli Technology Co., Ltd. is a mechanical equipment manufacturer with over 30 years’ experiences of plastic pipe extrusion equipment, new environmental protection and new materials equipment. Since its establishment Fangli has been developed based on user’s demands. Through continuous improvement, independent R&D on the core technology and digestion & absorption of advanced technology and other means, we have developed PVC pipe extrusion line, PP-R pipe extrusion line, PE water supply / gas pipe extrusion line, which was recommended by the Chinese Ministry of Construction to replace imported products. We have gained the title of “First-class Brand in Zhejiang Province”.

Twin-screw extruders represent an optimal type of granulation equipment for plastic material recycling in current applications, featuring excellent feeding performance, mixing and plasticizing capabilities, venting efficiency, extrusion stability, and other advantages.

Extruders are categorized into single-screw and twin-screw types. A common question is how to distinguish between them. For twin-screw extruders, the motor power is generally fixed according to the machine model, while the heating zone size is variable. In contrast, for single-screw extruders, the motor power is variable, whereas the heating zone size is fixed. Single-screw extruders typically process granular materials, while twin-screw extruders are suitable for powder materials.

The conical twin-screw extruder is a high-efficiency mixing extrusion device. It primarily consists of a forced feeder, screw barrel, high-precision gearbox, vacuum venting system, etc. This extruder offers uniform mixing, strong plasticizing ability, stable operation, and high output, making it suitable for directly processing PVC powder into finished products. When equipped with various molds and auxiliary equipment, it can be used to produce a wide range of plastic pipes, profiles, plates, and sheets.

Next, let's examine the components of an extruder production line. The machine is mainly composed of the screw, barrel, heating and cooling systems, transmission system, die head, electrical control cabinet, and other parts.

The twin-screw extruder can be divided into the following system sections:

Feeding System: Includes a hopper, stirring motor, and feeding motor. It prevents material accumulation and ensures smooth entry into the feed inlet.

External Heating System: Primarily uses heating rods and the barrel to efficiently raise material temperature, promoting plasticization.

Cooling System: Utilizes a heat exchange system composed of thermal oil or water to reduce body heat, thereby effectively controlling barrel temperature.

Hydraulic Screen-Changing System: Employs replaceable filter screens to trap impurities, enhance the degree of plasticization, and ensure the uniformity and stability of output material quality.

Vacuum System: Removes moisture and other low-molecular volatiles from the material.

Electrical Control System: Responsible for monitoring and controlling relevant equipment within the main and auxiliary material systems.

Screw System: The most critical component of the extruder. It can be divided into the feeding/transport section, melting section (venting port), plasticizing section (vacuum port), and metering/discharge section.

The screw system primarily accomplishes the plasticizing and conveying processes of the material, significantly impacting the performance and quality of the final product. Parameter settings for the screw vary across different machine models and manufacturers, necessitating careful attention.
